Dicen que heroes get remembered but legends never die. When it comes to Sixto “Sugar Man” Rodriguez, he has qualities of both. He released two albums in the 1970’s that, while unsuccessful in the US, became part of the rallying cries of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Jose is a New Americano whose passion for helping others is only matched by his creativity. In 2010, he launched the City of Chicago’s public health social media strategy, enabling the city to communicate with its residents using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and several other social media tools to help improve the health of the city. Most recently, he joined NewFuturo.com where he is using his communications background to help Latino youth across the country find the tools and resources they need to get into college. However, LatinoJustice PRLDEF has been one group of Revolucionarios fighting since 1972 for the civil rights of Latinos. This group of lawyers uses social media to engage and inform Latinos of their rights so that they can strike back against the system. Some of the more Influential social media engagements include Twitter Town Halls meetings and a Tumblr to report stories of Latinos being stopped and accosted by the NYPD. While a picture is worth a thousand words, Eric V. Ibarra’s impact on Latina youth is worth a thousand more. Eric turned his hobby, photography, into a tool to give young Latinas a voice. He founded Las Fotos Project in 2010 after seeing a need for teenage girls throughout Los Angeles to have a skill that could help build their confidence and self-esteem. Eric utilizes social media platforms to collaborate with other organizations and garner national support for the work he is doing, empowering Latina youth through photography mentorship, and self-expression.

Lucia was the visionary and driving force behind creating MamasLatinas.com, now the largest social network for Hispanic mothers in the US with 780K monthly unique visitors. MamasLatinas is dedicated to understanding, connecting, entertaining and empowering Latina moms by speaking to their cultura, interests and needs. Joaquin Guerra has run digital programs and strategies for political campaigns in the past, but in the summer of 2009 he used digital engagement to tell Walter Lara’s story and in return created a movement that allowed for his stay from deportation. Using Youtube videos that average ten minutes in length, Maestro Andalón has helped over 34 million people in all of Iberoamérica and the United States access math education through his free video math classes. Sara Inés Calderón is 200% Latina.  She exemplifies dos mundos by living her life as a modern Latina in the United States while always keeping true to her cultura. By utilizing her expressive journalism skills to bridge Latinos and the digital space, she’s able to bring new ideas and concepts to the table while bringing to light the stories that need to be told with honesty, finesse, and respect. Through her new start-up, Más Wired, a Latino and technology news site, she puts a huge focus on covering and inspiring more Latinos to be involved in technology.  By being a part of the MiTu team, the first Latino Network on YouTube, she keeps this goal in mind when she specifically showcases Latino talents through the network. Whether she’s posting about immigration or the latest meme, she’s engaging with her networks in a way that creates a deeper understanding of the Latino experience.

Veronique de Miguel is a native of Argentina and has gained a reputation for being la voz de la mujer in South America. This innovative bloguera is responsible for Mujer Latina Online, the “políticamente incorrecta” website that inspires Latinas to use the power of their voice and intellect to challenge the stereotypical portrayal of women in South America. Veronique is also a radio personality, she co-hosts the AM radio show “Primero Vos” where she stands as a symbol of the progressive Latina voice.

Edgar Mejia, known as a social-do-gooder, has developed a company that focuses on the use of technology to remotely support various chambers of commerce and business organizations.  He has educated Hispanic business owners about better business practices, innovation, and philanthropy. Through his use of social media, Edgar has also supported a number of non-profits in the fight against poverty amongst children.  In addition, he has funded E-Commerce projects that have created sustainable social impacts in Latin America and the United States.

Tech enthusiast Michelle Olvera is Founder and CEO of a boutique digital media company called SupaSistaLatina Media. Through ‘SupaDaily,’ a daily email newsletter for the hip English-speaking Latina, Michelle encourages her loyal and growing audience to achieve success at work, in life and in play. She convergences social media and email marketing to assist advertisers in optimizing offers sold to one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. market, the U.S. Hispanic Millennial Woman. Serving as an Executive Committee Member of the Latino Startup Alliance, Michelle believes in creating a community for Latinos to succeed in, while also changing the view of who Latinas are.

Daniela uses technology as a tool to promote the printed word. Through her work with People of Color Zine Project and POC Race Riot she helps bring zines created by minorities to universities, research centers, libraries, and other POC spaces for workshops and panels. In true mobilizer fashion, Daniela’s messages online and off are meant to not only raise awareness, but inspire action.

An award-winning journalist with a Yale Ph.D., Viviana Hurtado owns her smarts and shares it with others through her website, The Wise Latina Club. She embodies The New Americana with her authenticity, independence, and by turning her fellow Latinas onto politics by using engaging and down-to-earth content that inspires those who come across it. Using blogs, videos, facebook posts and tweets, Viviana has gained the admiration and recognition from many, including Latism 2011 and 2012 Best Political blogger, Blogs by Latinas’ Best 2011 and 2012 News blog, Forbes.com political influencers, and one of Voxxi.com’s most powerful Latinas in social media.

In 2009, Magaly launched Swebapps, the first build-your-own-app platform. As a result she garnered the attention from the likes of Time magazine, Mashable, GigaOm, and Entrepreneur magazine to name a few. Since then, she’s helped local, national, and global brands find their footing in the mobile space. Most recently, Magaly showcased her innovation in supporting the creation of the site and system for San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s SA2020 Initiative. Lance Rios’ tech-savvy has spiraled him into internet media stardom. Winner of the Social Revolución’s El Innovator Award in 2012, Rios continues to run the popular Being Latino Onternet Magazine, which now boasts a whopping 85,000 Facebook Likes.

Laura Donnelly Gonzalez and Alicia Rancon are two University of Texas grads that transformed a class project into the powerful nonprofit and online magazine, Latinitas. Since 2009, Laura and Alicia have empowered young Latinas with programs, the most contemporary Web 2.0 platforms, open source software, and social media opportunities for self-expression. As founders of the only agency/publication of its kind, they have engaged 1,000 student bloggers to MyLatinitas.com and trained 20,000 elementary, middle and high school Latinas as reporters, bloggers, vloggers, and pod-casters whose voices bring to life the New Americana.

Having lived in Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and having strong ties with Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Venezuela, Conz  is well aware of what is happening, where and why. Between moves she developed a strong attachment to computers and the digital space, seeing it as a way of staying in touch with friends left behind. Now, as Social Media Editor for Univision News and through her own Twitter presence, she shines the light not only on issues that affect Latinos inside the US, but also social issues happening in Latin America.

As a brilliant, hard-working teacher and leader, Sandra  Ordoñez has an exciting digital history that includes collaboration with open source and web communities. Founder of Collaborative Nation, a virtual hacker space for those who love all things digital, she aims to foster an environment where individuals can educate themselves on topics that include digital strategy, community management, bicultural/multicultural communications, web culture, and collaboration. This New Americana also helps organizations navigate the online universe, like Girls in Tech and their programs, in order to inspire and educate girls and women to take on careers in technology.

In true Revolucionario fashion, Rick Wion has been the driving force behind McDonald’s various social marketing campaigns for the past seven years. He has inspired Latinos worldwide to exclaim “me encanta” by creating a one-stop Spanish language website for McDonald’s lovers to connect through music, online games and interactive downloads. Yet his true dedication to la gente is manifested in his work with HACER, a McDonalds House Charities program that provides scholarships to aspiring high school graduates. Erika Batista is a fierce, strong-willed, and hard working Ecuadorian fashionista who is living proof that you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it.  In slightly over a year she has not only successfully started her own bilingual fashion blog, Lola Blue, which has a substantial readership in both English and Spanish, but also has created an online jewelry boutique called Lola Blue, the closet. Gaby Pacheco is a Miami-based DREAMER fighting for the educational rights of young undocumented students. An undocumented American herself, Gaby walked 1,500 miles from Miami to Washington, DC  in 2010, urging President Obama to stop the separations of families and deportations of DREAM Act–eligible youth. Through her journey in 2010 and until today, Gaby has used social media as a tool in mobilizing for change and spreading the message of DREAMERS like her.

By undocumented students, for undocumented students. Dream Activist shares individual stories through social media, and has accumulated significant mass media attention in hopes of passing the DREAM Act. This resource network hopes to spread tolerance among all Americans, documented or not.

As founder & Chief Inspired Visionary at The Orphaned Earring, Denisse Montalvan uses her personal and her organization’s Facebook pages, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to ask people to mail in their orphaned earrings and unwanted fashion jewelry to make bracelets. By asking and collecting orphaned earrings and unwanted fashion jewelry on her social media platforms, she re-purposes the materials and creates bracelets that are later sold. The Orphaned Earring is dedicated to bringing arts and crafts, school supplies as well as year-round festivities to four orphanages in Latin America: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Colombia.
