Maria T. Kumar
Winner 2012 - The New Americano
Maria Teresa is an advocate for American Latino civil and political rights. A native of Colombia, who emigrated to the United States at a young age with her mother, she was raised in a bi-cultural household with her Colombian mother and her adoptive American father. She grew up keenly aware of both the mainstream American identity, as well as that of the Latino celebrating both world’s cultures and traditions, speaking both languages which eventually help shape her concept of the American Latino. Now she works tirelessly with Voto Latino—a nonpartisan civic engagement organization she founded with actress Rosario Dawson in 2004—to engage and empower American Latinos through registering them to vote. She also reports on Latino issues on MSNBC as a MSNBC Contributor. Maria Teresa Kumar is the 2012 Revolucionario Awards Winner for the New Americano category.
