2013 Nominee: Sixto Rodriguez

The New Americano

Dicen que heroes get remembered but legends never die. When it comes to Sixto “Sugar Man” Rodriguez, he has qualities of both. He released two albums in the 1970’s that, while unsuccessful in the US, became part of the rallying cries of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. His lyrics elevated him to hero status in South Africa and his legend lives on for new generations of Americanos to appreciate in the form of anti-establishment ballads aimed at challenging the norm.
