2013 Nominee: Tony Diaz
Tony Diaz is a professor, author, and founder of Nuestra Palabra, a non-profit organization that promotes Latino literature. He is also a self-described book smuggler and one of the organizers of Librotraficante. When a ban prohibiting ethnic studies in Arizona was passed, Tony appeared in a Youtube video saying, “Arizona, we’re throwing the book at you.” This was just the beginning of a movement that has now delivered 1,000 banned books into Arizona, and whose message has been amplified by Tony’s active presence on Twitter as @Librotraficante. By advocating access to information on Latino culture, Tony demonstrates his dedication to freedom of speech and civil rights.
